Message from our Founder

To the friends and supporters of ECF,

I am delighted to update you on the progress of ECF Village in Aleltu during 2006/2007, its ninth year of operation. During this past year, we enrolled more destitute children into the program, increasing their numbers to 347.

Starting from 2002, we have begun to reach hundreds of young people in the wider community in life skills training around HIV/AIDS, thanks to USAID, enabling our outreach support. Last year we completed phase three of development, which includes grades 5-8, a library, a science lab, and dairy expansion. Currently in phase four we are raising funds to complete all classrooms until grade 12 and a vocational training center.

ECF Village’s Education and Development Program (ECF-EDP) in Aleltu continues to inspire us. The children’s resilience in the face of grinding poverty and distress, including HIV/AIDS related problems, is truly remarkable. Their spirit of hope and optimism re-enforces our determination to reach out to more children on the brink and in great need. Our goal is to reach 500 children by 2010. In September 2007, we expect to enroll more children and to continue our community outreach programs to the surrounding communities, especially in respect of HIV/AIDS prevention and training.

We owe much of our progress to the fruitful partnerships with dedicated individuals, businesses, development organizations and indeed the communities themselves. The board and staff of ECF are deeply appreciative and grateful to the partners and friends who have chosen to reach out and help make a difference the ECF way.

As much progress as we have made, however, ECF Village does not have a secure future without durable child sponsors. I appeal to all friends and supporters, individuals, organizations and businesses, who have not yet done so, to join ECF’s child sponsorship program and help sustain ECF Village. I hope you will find the time to look through the report and to those not sponsoring a child, please consider helping one or two children. A child sponsorship form features at the end of this report.

The ECF team looks forward to continuing this joint journey of giving back and rediscovering our common good in this inter-dependant and fragile world and for those who are only now learning about ECF, we invite you to visit us on the ground or virtually.

Sincerely yours,

Anna Getaneh
