6:30-7:45am Genet puts on her school uniform and washes her hands and face. She takes her school bag and leaves home with her older sister, Almaz who also goes to school at ECF. They walk about one kilometer to school.
Tuesday is one of the market days in Aleltu, and many people are gathered in the centre of the market to sell and buy different kinds of goods.
7:45-8:00am Genet and her sister arrive at ECF.
8:00-8:15am Flag Ceremony: All the elementary class students and teachers gather together to sing songs and listen to the daily announcements before starting the school day.
8:15-8:30am Genet gathers with other classmates and elementary class students for breakfast of fresh baked bread and milk in the ‘tukul.’

8:30-9:15am First period is Amharic (National language of Ethiopia) class on Tuesdays with Teacher Tesfanesh. In today’s lesson Genet and the other 4th grade students learn about the history of Ethiopia. They completed the matching section in their school book for class work.
9:15-10:00am Environmental Science class with Teacher Bilane. The teacher asks Genet what she taught the day before. The students learn the effects of deforestation on the environment.
10:00-10:45am Third Period is Mathematics. The class goes over the homework from the night before; Genet correctly completes number 2 on the blackboard. Then Teacher Lijalem continues teaching about multiplication. Genet thinks that multiplication is easy!

10:45-11:15am During break time Genet goes to the library to read an Amharic book about Ethiopian folktales.
11:15-12:00pm After break, 4th grade has English Class. During this lesson Teacher Tesfanesh teaches them about likes and dislikes. Genet and her peers each write a paragraph on what they like best and least about school. Tomorrow Genet will read her paragraph to the class.
12:00-12:45pm Fifth period is Amharic again with Teacher Tesfanesh. They correct the matching activity about history they did during first period. Genet gets 9 out of 10.
12:45-1:30pm Before going to the lunchroom, Genet and her friends wash their hands. Today’s meal is “sega wot” meat stew with injera. Genet likes lunch but her favorite food is pasta.
1:30-2:00pm After lunch Genet plays a local game similar to hopscotch with her 3 closest friends; Solome, Mahader and Yenenish from 4th grade.

2:00-2:45pm After the break Genet and the rest of 4th grade has Environmental Science again with Teacher Bilane. During this period they talk about the basic needs of life.
2:45-3:30pm The last period of the day is Aesthetics. Teacher Mekuria continues to teach 4th grade about nature. For today’s lesson the students go on a nature walk and have to collect different articles from environment to make a collage.
3:30-4:00pm For their after school snack Genet enjoys bread and then goes back to class for the student’s after school study program. Today Abel Kebede from 7th grade is going over their lessons for the day. Then the students do their homework, mathematics is the only subject they have for homework today.
4:00-6:30pm Once the after school study program is over Genet and her friends go out into the field to play football. Genet doesn’t actually play today since she wasn’t picked but she enjoys watching the game from the side lines.
6:30-7:00pm Genet walks home with her friend Bazhayu from 4th grade and they play outside Genet’s house until her mother calls her inside to study.
7:00-7:15pm Before dinner Genet and her sister Almaz study and finish their schoolwork. Genet already finished her homework during the after school program so she studies English and Environmental Science instead.
7:15-8:30pm Genet talks with her family during dinner and then goes to bed.
